The AWS Certified Welder Program is based on performance. In other words you have to take a test at an accredited test facility. Davis Laboratories (702-251-0202) and Joule Inspection and Testing (Pedro Chavez 702-658-4449) are two of our favorite places in Las Vegas to get certified. One of the most important certifications is the "All position plate, unlimited thickness" (Click on my AWS D1.1 certification on the right). This certification test is done by welding 1" thick plates in the vertical and overhead positions. This also qualifies you for 24" pipe and larger. Even tougher to achieve is the 6G pipe certification which is done with either a 6" sch. 80 pipe in a 45 deg. position (un-movable of course) or is done with a 2" coupon in the same position. The 2-3/4" O.D. x 5/8" coupon gets you qualified for 1" pipe thru unlimited diamiter and unlimited thickness! Also dificult is the AWS D1.2 (Aluminum) certification. GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Weld) is commonly called TIG or Heli-Arc welding. You can also do a Stainless Pipe Certification with GTAW. Basically you could have a nearly infinate number of certifications when you consider the different welding processes, SMAW (Stick), GMAW (Wire), GTAW (Heli-Arc), etc. and considering different metal types like Steel, Stainless, Alumn., etc and considering other
things like pipe, sheetmetal, thickness, and code etc. So, with all these variables there are many posibilities for certifications.
